Palacio de Velázquez — a hidden art gem inside Madrid’s Retiro Park

Palacio de Velázquez is a historic exhibition pavilion located in the heart of El Retiro Park, Madrid. Built between 1881 and 1883 for the National Exhibition of Mining, it was designed by architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco, whose work gives the palace its name.

Today, the building is managed by the Museo Reina Sofía and hosts rotating contemporary art exhibitions, often featuring Spanish and international artists. Entrance is typically free, making it a popular stop for both art lovers and casual park-goers.

With its striking red brick façade, iron structure, and glazed ceramic decoration, the palace is not only a cultural venue but also a fine example of 19th-century Spanish architecture.
